Amy Stout This year, with remote and hybrid learning, teachers have found new ways to provide students with hands-on experiences. This SERF-funded grant will allow students to participate in a hands-on activity at home: DIY Kites. The teacher will read two fiction picture books about kites and each student will be given a DIY kite kit to take home. Students will decorate kites, follow directions and assemble kites, then fly and observe the kites, giving students a chance to see the scientific side of kites and kite flying.
Imagine Learning Subscription for ESL Students SPS District 2020-2021

RECENTLY AWARDED!

Eileen Hanson To help serve Sudbury’s growing English-learning population, SERF awarded a grant to SPS to purchase 20 subscriptions to Imagine Learning, an online program that is designed and differentiated with the English Learner in mind. Imagine Learning allows students to practice needed listening, reading, speaking and writing skills both at home and in the classroom. Students will also have access to the program over the summer to help practice and retain their English skills.
Gizmos Online Interactive Science Simulations LSRHS 2020-2021

Nicole Digenis, Science Coordinator SERF funded a grant for “Gizmos”, a web-based learning platform that provides engaging interactive science simulations for both hybrid and fully-remote educational scenarios. This learning platform will allow educators to continue to provide robust laboratory experiences, including remotely.
Digital Theater LSRHS 2020-2021

Carly Evans A SERF funded grant for a subscription to Digital Theatre will enable teachers to find alternative ways for students to experience theater and theatrical productions, including videos of professional plays, interviews with theater professionals, examples of production materials and discussions on how theater gets “done”.
Family Game Night – Math Edition SPS 2019-2020 Julie Whitehead, Amie Abdal-Khabir, Christine Grigsby, Kate Freitas, Karen Wolfson Students and families will gather to play commercial games that reinforce math skills, strategies and problem solving. The games will then be distributed to classrooms throughout the district for students to continue to enjoy.
Mindfulness Toolbox Haynes 2019-2020 Kristyn Traversi By using tangible items such as Hobberman Mini-Spheres and Tingsha Bell Chimes, students will practice mindfulness techniques, helping to make them more focused and ready to learn to their full potential.
High-Interest Inclusive Recess Games Haynes 2019-2020 Erin Kehew Games such as giant Jenga, Connect Four and Tic-Tac-Toe will provide students with fun opportunities to participate in inclusive, non-physical recess activities. They’ll practice communication skills, turn-taking, problem solving and interpersonal skills all while enjoying a break from their scheduled school-work.
Let Every Voice Be Heard Haynes 2019-2020  Christina Grassetti  Students in this 4th grade classroom will have fun as they take the spotlight, let their voice be heard and gain confidence using a Qball throwable microphone.
Language Learning in the 21st Century LSRHS 2019-2020 Desiree Butter LS offers capstone classes in five languages. A consultant will assist in revamping the curriculum to align with that of lower level classes. Students will enjoy learning by studying more contemporary themes such as family and communities, public identities, science and technology, contemporary life and global challenges. The realigned curriculum will also create an assessment framework to measure proficiency with the languages.
SRA Spelling Mastery Nixon 2018-2019 Drew Kelsey This grant funds the purchase of a curriculum enhancement that is a multi-modal approach designed to give students several ways to learn and respond to new spelling concepts.  Students will get cumulative practice with spelling concepts thus increasing their ability to encode effectively and compose written responses with improved fluency.   The program also contains a data management system to monitor student progress.
Micro:Bit for Macro Fun Curtis 2018-2019 Rex Phung – Digital Literacy/Computers, Michelle Blair – Music This grant will fund the purchase of a micro:bit as well as a related summer training workshop. Students will learn coding and produce both design patterns as well as music
Classroom Library Building Project Curtis 2018-2019 Chris Thibodeau Students were asked to provide the titles of their all-time favorite book and one that they want to read soon. These suggestions will be the basis of additions to the classroom library – building a modern and inspiring classroom library of books that students want or that are loved by current students. This library will serve high-flying readers, and hopefully inspire students who are not readers to choose something they’ll enjoy and become lifelong readers.
Teaching STEM Skills by Solving the Rubik’s Cube Nixon 2018-2019 Anderson Manuel Holding the Rubik’s Cube, handling the manipulative, concentrating on problem solving, twisting and turning the parts, can help children grasp important math concepts including area, perimeter, volume, angles, algorithms and enumeration, among many other geometry and algebraic topics. Students will work in pairs to solve the 2×2 cubes, and move on to the 3×3 after mastery.
LS Recording Studios Refurbishment LSRHS 2018-2019 Russell Forester, James Goulet This grant will fund microphones, speakers, soundproofing and audio interfaces to update the recording studio. This studio provides a space for students to tap into their creativity.
World Language Proficiency Based Instruction Workshop LSRHS 2018-2019 Joan Campbell The World Language Department will invite Laura Terrill, an expert in proficiency-based instruction (the rising standard in World Language instruction) to conduct a workshop on the methodologies and to facilitate creation of units.  Students will use authentic materials and authentic scenarios to both acquire and practice the target language. This makes language instruction more meaningful for both the student and the teacher.
Branches Early Readers for STEPS and Library  Haynes  2018-2019 Dorothy Kramer, Pam Radler Scholastic has created the “branches” reading series which contains high interest, low-reading level books in many genres. This grant will fund the purchase of two sets of these highly sought-after student-friendly books; one set for the Learning Center and one for the library.
LS Academy Greenhouse LSRHS 2018-2019  Tracie Lopez L-S Academy is a new program for students with social-emotional issues which will teach science experientially. This grant will fund a greenhouse on the property where students can plant and cultivate their own produce. They will have to learn about climate and growing conditions as well as what the plants need to survive. Once grown, the students can incorporate the produce into meals which they create in the Academy kitchen.  The greenhouse will provide not only an academic space, but also a calming, soothing atmosphere.
 LS Academy Therapeutic Strategies Supplies LSRHS 2018-2019 Tracie Lopez L-S Academy, slated to open in the fall of 2019, is a program for students with emotional issues. When students are overwhelmed with anxiety and depression, it impacts their ability to attend school, attend classes as scheduled, and initiate and complete tasks.  This grant will help o create a welcoming space where students can take a short break from school activities when needed, reset themselves emotionally, and return to their schedule and classes as quickly as possible.  More time in the classroom equals more learning.
LS Peers (Prevent, Educate, Empower and Respond to Issues of Substance Abuse) LSRHS 2018-2019 Christopher Shutzer, Clinical Counselor, LS This grant will fund a speaker (Dr. Marisa Silveri), an expert on the intersection of the teenage brain and substance abuse. The presentation and meeting will be for teachers, and the goal will be to educate teachers on their unique role as an agent of impact in student choices and decision making.
Stop the Bleed LSRHS 2018-2019 Greg Gammons This grant funded the purchase of a bleeding control training kit.  This training, as recommended by the American Academy of Surgeons, will now be part of the CPR/First Aid curriculum in Wellness for all 10th graders.
Flexible Seating Haynes 2017-2018 Sharon MacDonald This grant will offer the school an opportunity to try a variety of adaptive seating for all students. Funding will allow the purchase of four different types of seating which will help to improve the attention and comfort of students with varying needs.
Alternative Seating Options for the Regular Ed Classroom Loring 2017-2018 Katherine Brown, 3rd Grade Classroom Teacher This grant will fund the purchase of fifteen alternate seating options which will help students optimize their focus and attention while in class. Students’ improved emotional self-regulation is also a goal. Students will try a range of options and rotate use of those most beneficial. In addition to teacher observations, students will participate in pre and post self-assessments.
Building Mindfulness Loring 2017-2018 Rebecca Howard The Building Mindfulness grant will provide school staff with videos, audio sessions, and books, that can be used one on one, in small groups, and in whole class settings to build the mindfulness of students from grades K-5.  These resources can be used throughout the school day to provide physical movement, promote calm, and teach strategies that can lower stress, and build resilience and confidence.
Google Camp Keynote Speaker Curtis 2017-2018 Liz Kerrigan This grant is a request for Kasey Bell, a tech-ed blogger and author, to be our keynote speaker for the third annual SPS Google Camp.  Kasey believes that technology is not a magic solution for education, but an opportunity to “shake things up!” and help teachers connect, grow, and create dynamic learning experiences for students! The grant money would also allow each Google Camp participant to receive Kasey Bell’s new book, Shake Up Learning.
Leveled Library Collection Nixon 2017-2018 Rebecca Goldthwaite, Sarah Rivera and Briana Pasciuto – Kindergarten Teachers This grant will fund the purchase of a collection of developmentally appropriate nonfiction decodable texts to support nonfiction reading and writing units as well as guided reading groups. School-based literary specialists will have access to the collection for use across grade levels. Focus will be on high interest topics in order to keep students engaged.
ECMS Makerspace Expansion Curtis 2017-2018 Elizabeth Kerrigan, Instructional Technology, Curtis and Justin Dulak, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent This grant will fund a 3D printer, a vinyl cutter, associated supplies and books which will greatly expand the capabilities of the Curtis Makerspace. The goal is to continue the connections, communication, collaboration and creativity while getting more students and classes involved in the Makerspace.
Expanding 3D Printing Curtis 2017-2018 David Jurewicz and Christopher Reich –  Engineering Teachers This grant will provide an expanded, in-depth experience and exposure of 3D design and printing for all 7th and 8th grade engineering students by funding a Makerbot replicator, 3D printers, and associated materials.
Climate Change Curriculum Curtis 2017-2018 Tom Rawson – Grade 8 Science Teacher This grant will fund training, beyond the teacher’s current level of expertise, in how to most effectively deliver climate change content to students. Teachers will work with subject matter experts from Mass Audubon to determine the key climate change concepts that are important to middle schoolers and develop the most engaging way to explore them.
Enrichment Class/Growth Mindset Curtis 2017-2018 Maggi Taurone – Teacher This grant will fund a full classroom set of the book, A Long Walk to Water. The book will be read in an enrichment class that will be offered to all 8th graders. While reading the book as a class, the importance of a growth mindset will be stressed. The plot, characters and setting will be analyzed. Connections between the book and student’s communities will be explored while they learn how to apply the mindset illustrated in the book to their own daily lives.
Mobile App Development LSRHS 2017-2018 Mark Sobkowicz This grant funded professional development by allowing the applicant to take an online course in Android app development.  The computer science department at LSRHS can now offer Android App Development/ IOS as a course for students.
“If They Had Known” Film LSRHS 2017-2018 Susan Shields and Lizzy Murphy This grant funded two showings of the movie “If They Had Known” which is the story of Clay Soper, a college student who died from a mix of drugs and alcohol. Approximately 600 upperclassmen viewed the film during school hours. There was an evening, public showing as well.  The objective was to spark conversation among students, alert them to risks and teach them about the signs and symptoms of overdose.
All School Staff Read LSRHS 2017-2018 Bella Wong This grant funded copies of the book “Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria”, by Beverly Tatum.  The shared reading provided a common base for discussion about race, particularly adolescent racial identity development.  This is part of an ongoing effort to improve Lincoln Sudbury’s racial climate to reduce barriers to learning for all students.
Poetry at LS LSRHS 2017-2018 Danielle Weisse, Annalisa Notaro, Paula Myers, Sue King This grant funded a month long celebration of poetry which included writing workshops led by 10 professional poets, readings by professional poets, “From Shakespeare to Hip Hop”  assembly and a student open-mic performance.  The extensive offerings allowed all students to experience poetry in both the  spoken and written form.
Construction of Rolling Boards for Visual Art Display LSRHS 2017-2018 Paul Sarapas, FATA Department Coordinator This grant will fund the materials needed to build six rolling art display boards which will be used to display student art. The displays will be available for viewing by the LS population and the community at large.
High School Quiz Show Buzzers LSRHS 2017-2018  Desiree Butter This grant funded the purchase of a hand-held buzzer system to be used by the WGBH Quiz Show Team. This purchase enables the students to practice in an environment closer to the actual environment they will encounter during the formal competition.
Bringing “Angaje”, a Haitian dance production, to LSRHS LSRHS 2016-2017 Marie-Josee Galano, Steve Desrosiers, Dot Samsi, Julia Keith, Desiree Butter This grant funds a dance performance of “Angaje” to raise awareness about the struggle against homophobia in Haiti and educate about Haitian traditional music and dance. This fight for justice encourages students to look at the world surrounding them and acquire knowledge of those human differences in a global context to act and interact as competent citizens of the world.
STEAM Pilot Initiative Haynes 2016-2017 Dorothy Kramer The goal of this grant is to fund the implementation of a science, technology, engineering, art, and math-derived focused (STEAM) curriculum pilot program for Fifth grade and Kindergarten. The lessons will be aligned with standards in math and science in order to provide students opportunities to use content knowledge and skills in ways that are practical and applicable to what they will encounter throughout their lives following the 5 Es instructional model: engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate.
Enriching Social-Emotional Education thru Literature, Open Circle and DESSA Noyes 2016-2017 Elizabeth Clark, Barbara Gogan The goal of this grant is to support the piece of the Open Circle curriculum teaching social-emotional skills through literature. Using picture books and short fiction stories, students will see examples of skills and issues demonstrated in an age appropriate manner that can help teachers to illustrate the social competencies and further discussions on social skills.
Courageous Community LSRHS 2016-2017 Brendan Wimberly, Lori Hodin This grant funded workshops to foster connections amongst Intersections students as a source of healing and strength for student leaders as they engage in social justice work. The workshop also helped students gain new skills and strategies to interrupt injustice and cultural misunderstandings.
Project Design for Deeper Learning at the High Tech High Fall Residencies Conference LSRHS 2016-2017 Bella Wong This grant funded conference fees for a group of administrators and teachers to learn how best to support and implement student project based learning through the newly formed LS Innovation Hub for Learning.
EDU Breakout Kits Noyes 2016-2017 Kristin Moffat, Shannon Famigletti This grant funds Breakout challenges kits, which come with a collection of locks, hidden contraptions, and other “diversion hardware” and can be used across content areas. Players have a fixed amount of time to solve a series of challenges, riddles and mysteries in order to “break out” all while teaching critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving.
Teamworks for Elementary METCO Students SPS District 2016-2017 Scott Mulcahy, Steve Desrosiers This grant plans to bring all elementary METCO students to TEAMWORKS to provide students with the opportunity to experience “experiential and education-based teambuilding events”. The activities would be selected to enhance student connectedness and promote a unified student culture and climate.
Medical Arts Library Membership LSRHS 2016-2017 Mel Gonsalves This grant funded a two year membership to the Nucleus Medical Arts Library which will  allow any teacher at LS access to many types of informative videos and resources.  The videos will be used in class to enhance lectures and more importantly, the 400+plus animations videos are narrated with exceptional quality. Teachers can also create keynote type presentations while using over 20,000 medical illustrations and other tools. Topics include monograph anatomy, physiology, embryology, surgery, trauma, pathology, diseases, conditions and other topics.
Flexible Seating Options in the Regular Classroom Loring 2016-2017 Sara Fischer This grant provided a regular fourth grade classroom with various flexible seating options, including Hokki stools, stability chairs and adjustable podiums. Attention span and focus increases when a student’s body can bounce or shift without disturbance. By having a variety of seating options for students to choose from, students will improve their focus for optimum learning.
Bullying Prevention through Empathy and Kindness SPS District 2016-2017 Betsy Grams This grant funded conference fees for applicant to attend the International Bullying Prevention Association’s Conference allowing an opportunity to make a greater investment in students’ social emotional learning, success and academic growth.
Sun Spotter Sunspot Tracking as a Means to Prove Solar Rotation LSRHS 2016-2017 Chris Collins, Samantha Parker This grant allowed the LS Earth Science and Astronomy instructors to purchase 3 new Sun Spotter devices. Sun Spotter devices allow students to safely view the photosphere (visible surface of the Sun) by projecting an image of the Sun onto a piece of paper. This allows students to identify and track (by tracing the sunspots on a piece of paper) sunspots over the course of their investigation of the Sun and stellar evolution units.
Open Circle Re-Energizer Workshop Haynes 2016-2017 Sharon MacDonald, Kristyn Travers This grant funded a three hour workshop specifically to review strategies, vocabulary and routines for the Open Circle Social Competency Program that SPS uses as part of its Social-Emotional Learning Program. Open Circle provides a unique, evidence-based social and emotional learning program for elementary schools from Kindergarten through Grade 5. The workshop facilitators delivered interactive, in-person professional development for all school staff. This workshop included classroom teachers, specialists and assistants. The curriculum proactively develops children’s social and emotional skills, including managing emotions, empathy, positive relationships and problem solving. Open Circle helps schools build communities where students feel safe, cared for and engaged in learning.
School Start Time Forum SPS District 2016-2017 Jeff Kotkin, Christine Hogan This grant funded the full honorarium for Dr. Judith Owens, MD, MPH, who spoke about the importance of sleep for our students at Curtis Middle School on January 12, 2017, at 7:00pm. Dr. Owens is the Director of Sleep Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and a faculty member in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She is an internationally-recognized authority on pediatric sleep and the author of over 150 original research and review articles in peer-review journals, chapters, and books on the topic. This event was free and open to the public.
FATA Wacom Drawing Tablets LSRHS 2016-2017 Jessica Sperandio, Carol Padden, Paul Sarapas This grant funded the  purchase of digital drawing tablets that will provide students access to an industry standard tool used by contemporary artists. Access to these tools will allow students to fully realize the artistic and design capabilities of software (Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop). The tablets will facilitate student ability to acquire and use new skills in technology and design while creating designs that will integrate with other tools such as the laser cutter and cnc router.
A Taste of China: Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration LSRHS 2016-2017 Xin Dong, Vicky Caburian This grant funds the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration. The event provides hands-on cultural experience for learners and lovers of Chinese/Asian Cultures from various student groups. This open-door event also offers the whole LS community a taste of China; all students and staff have the opportunity to taste and make dumplings, learn to use chopsticks, learn about the Chinese Spring Festival, and engage in many other cultural activities.
Curtis Middle School Engineering Technology Classroom & Curriculum Project Curtis 2016-2017 Mark Rodriguez, Kim Swain The grant provides funds to update current 7th and 8th grade engineering and robotics classrooms with new tools, machines and technologies that can be used for curriculum and lessons with foundations in engineering. It will assist in creating an effective, hands-on curriculum that results in tangible learning for students in the 7th and 8th grade and implement engineering curriculum aligned with new MA Science Technology and Engineering standards.
Library Makerspace Haynes 2015-2016 Dorothy Kramer This grant will purchase technology and tools to support and enhance a current Makerspace in the school’s library. It requests items that will allow creativity in students through DIY STEM projects including those using LEGOs, Little Bits, a CRICUT electronic cutter, OSMO genius kits and books on engineering, coding, and architecture.
Enhancing Student Self-Regulation and Attending Skills through Teaching and Technology Noyes 2015-2016 Jennifer Neville, Elizabeth Clark This grant seeks to assist students who are feelings anxious/oppositional/poorly regulated as described in the book The Behavior Code and The Behavior Code Companion. It will expose staff to more of the strategies included in the books through workshops with Jessica Minahan and a continuation of the teacher book club. In addition, classroom technology will be introduced including amplification systems, MotivAiders and relevant apps.
Poet and Teacher, Regie Gibson LSRHS 2015-2016 Annalisa Notaro, Tim Jason This grant will provide funding to bring internationally known poet and teacher Regie Gibson to present to the entire school during National Poetry Month. He will also work with students who are enrolled in the creative writing course.
Epson Document Camera for use in Science LSRHS 2015-2016 Allison Richardson This grant will fund a document camera for use in Earth Science classrooms to especially help visual learners , English language learners, and those with learning disabilities.
Maximizing use of Existing Technologies for Students with Learning Disabilities LSRHS 2015-2016 Mary Jane Walsh This grant will help promote best practices regarding use of technology to facilitate achievement of Individual Education Program (IEP) goals for students with moderate learning disabilities. Funding is sought to hire an outside consultant to deliver professional development to special education teachers/liaisons. The professional development will be hands­ on use of Google extensions and apps for reading, writing, organizing and studying.
Wellness Day LSRHS 2015-2016 Susan Shields This grant will go towards funding various Wellness Day activities. It is a combination of health fair and conference with guest speakers, activities and contests. It is a large school event that brings together students and staff to celebrate health and well being in a fun and interactive way.
Parent Education Event SPS District 2015-2016 Betsy Grams This grant assists in bringing Jean Kilbourne to the Sudbury community to present a parent education event to build knowledge on the media industry and how to construct advertisements and to enhance skills to effectively discuss sensitive topics with children
Crossfit for Kids with Crossfit Prototype Curtis 2015-2016 Heather St. Onge, Barry Cain, Priya Ragounath (Nute) This grant funds a certified Crossfit Instructor to introduce students to Crossfit as a lifelong physical activity that students may choose to participate in outside of school. Students will learn what Crossfit is and the training principles associated with the program and different types of exercise one can do to build strength, coordination and endurance.
Zumba in the Physical Education Program Curtis 2015-2016 Priya Ragounath (Nute), Heather St. Onge, Barry Cain This grant funds a professional Zumba instructor to work directly with middle school students during the PE classes to expose them to a variety of dance steps and routines through varied music as well as to promote Zumba as a life long exercise.
CPR/AED Staff Education SPS District 2015-2016 Anne Chabot, Carol Bradford This grant allows for the purchase of the new materials (manikins) for staff CPR/AED trainings and to increase the number of trained staff at every school.
Pilot of b. Mindfulness Curriculum for Students and Adults LSRHS 2015-2016 Sandy Crawford This grant is for a research‐based, nine‐week mindfulness curriculum designed to give students and staff tools to come back to themselves, to rest, and to find meaning in the current moment. This pilot project will fund bringing in a trained facilitator to offer the b. curriculum to select groups to see how it impacts school community.
Writing Units of Study Loring 2015-2016 Melissa Sarno, Paul Orr, Diane Irvine, Barbara Durant This grants supports a newly implemented writing curriculum (K-2) by purchasing multiple copies of mentor texts, so that teachers can be teaching the units simultaneously and students can be using these texts as they work on their on writing.
Stability Balls in Classroom Noyes 2015-2016 Stephanie Cohen-Mongeon This grant will funds a classroom set of balance balls to be used as chairs. It has been found that when students sit on a balance ball (stability ball) they are using both sides of their brains. When the brain is being stimulated, they can be more focused on learning and it allows a student to process information, concentrate, discuss and participate in all areas of learning in the classroom. Stability balls have also been found to be incredibly helpful to students with attention challenges.
Special Olympics Field Trip Loring 2015-2016 Jennifer Cronin This grant would cover participation in the Special Olympics event. The special education students each get to bring a unified partner who participates in events with them-where everyone gets a medal. This event has turned into a highlight of the year for the students.
DBT Techniques & Counseling Curriculum Planning  Curtis 2015-2016 Lauren Richmond, Shafiya Finger This grant supports additional training for staff regarding Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT). This methodology has been used with students within special education identified as having emotional disabilities across grades 6-8, specifically students with depression and anxiety, who receive counseling support through counseling goals on their IEP’s.
FATA Laser Cutter LSRHS 2015-2016 Kelly Bulterna, Paul Sarapas This grant is for the purchase of a Laser Cutter which will expose students to the intersection of technology and visual art and will bring in possibilities for future collaboration with other departments such as science, technology, and math.
BoogieBoard Writing Tablet for Literacy and Learning Centers Nixon 2015-2016 Bonnie McGavrick This grant will fund the purchase of Boogie Board Writing Tablets for the Literacy Center and the Learning Center. This will allow staff to incorporate different teaching styles and environments to fit the needs of students, allow for more student engagement and participation, support active learning, let teachers and students communicate visually, and share new ideas and concepts.
Rekenreks for K-1 Nixon, Haynes, Noyes 2015-2016 Kathleen Lizotte, Stephanie Rousseau, Anne Pumphrey This grant supports the purchase of class sets of rekenreks and associated teacher resource books for each Kindergarten and First Grade class. Rekenreks “provide learners with the visual models they need to discover number relationships and develop a variety of addition and subtraction strategies, including doubles plus or minus one, making tens, and compensation, thereby leading to automaticity of basic facts”.
Center for Innovation LSRHS 2015-2016 Bella Wong LS is excited to announce that we are creating a pilot center for innovation space for LS staff to work with students through project based learning to foster the development of skills that will support a mindset for adaptability and creative innovation. The intention is to support projects developed via an established design thinking protocol whereby students are prompted to think carefully how to define the problem and the interactive process they will use to resolve a solution. Students will be encouraged to think of applications to social and technical global issues when defining problems for their projects. The ultimate mission is to encourage students to think of themselves as social entrepreneurs for the future.
