Amy Stout | This year, with remote and hybrid learning, teachers have found new ways to provide students with hands-on experiences. This SERF-funded grant will allow students to participate in a hands-on activity at home: DIY Kites. The teacher will read two fiction picture books about kites and each student will be given a DIY kite kit to take home. Students will decorate kites, follow directions and assemble kites, then fly and observe the kites, giving students a chance to see the scientific side of kites and kite flying. |

Eileen Hanson | To help serve Sudbury’s growing English-learning population, SERF awarded a grant to SPS to purchase 20 subscriptions to Imagine Learning, an online program that is designed and differentiated with the English Learner in mind. Imagine Learning allows students to practice needed listening, reading, speaking and writing skills both at home and in the classroom. Students will also have access to the program over the summer to help practice and retain their English skills. |

Students will work in pairs to solve the 2×2 cubes, and move on to the 3×3 after mastery. |

Students will use authentic materials and authentic scenarios to both acquire and practice the target language. This makes language instruction more meaningful for both the student and the teacher. |

| LS Academy Greenhouse | LSRHS | 2018-2019 | Tracie Lopez | L-S Academy is a new program for students with social-emotional issues which will teach science experientially. This grant will fund a greenhouse on the property where students can plant and cultivate their own produce. They will have to learn about climate and growing conditions as well as what the plants need to survive. Once grown, the students can incorporate the produce into meals which they create in the Academy kitchen. The greenhouse will provide not only an academic space, but also a calming, soothing atmosphere. |
| LS Academy Therapeutic Strategies Supplies | LSRHS | 2018-2019 | Tracie Lopez | L-S Academy, slated to open in the fall of 2019, is a program for students with emotional issues. When students are overwhelmed with anxiety and depression, it impacts their ability to attend school, attend classes as scheduled, and initiate and complete tasks. This grant will help o create a welcoming space where students can take a short break from school activities when needed, reset themselves emotionally, and return to their schedule and classes as quickly as possible. More time in the classroom equals more learning. |

The book will be read in an enrichment class that will be offered to all 8th graders. While reading the book as a class, the importance of a growth mindset will be stressed. The plot, characters and setting will be analyzed. Connections between the book and student’s communities will be explored while they learn how to apply the mindset illustrated in the book to their own daily lives. |

| “If They Had Known” Film | LSRHS | 2017-2018 | Susan Shields and Lizzy Murphy | This grant funded two showings of the movie “If They Had Known” which is the story of Clay Soper, a college student who died from a mix of drugs and alcohol. Approximately 600 upperclassmen viewed the film during school hours. There was an evening, public showing as well. The objective was to spark conversation among students, alert them to risks and teach them about the signs and symptoms of overdose. |
| All School Staff Read | LSRHS | 2017-2018 | Bella Wong | This grant funded copies of the book “Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria”, by Beverly Tatum. The shared reading provided a common base for discussion about race, particularly adolescent racial identity development. This is part of an ongoing effort to improve Lincoln Sudbury’s racial climate to reduce barriers to learning for all students. |
| Poetry at LS | LSRHS | 2017-2018 | Danielle Weisse, Annalisa Notaro, Paula Myers, Sue King | This grant funded a month long celebration of poetry which included writing workshops led by 10 professional poets, readings by professional poets, “From Shakespeare to Hip Hop” assembly and a student open-mic performance. The extensive offerings allowed all students to experience poetry in both the spoken and written form. |

The displays will be available for viewing by the LS population and the community at large. |

This purchase enables the students to practice in an environment closer to the actual environment they will encounter during the formal competition. |

This fight for justice encourages students to look at the world surrounding them and acquire knowledge of those human differences in a global context to act and interact as competent citizens of the world. |

Players have a fixed amount of time to solve a series of challenges, riddles and mysteries in order to “break out” all while teaching critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving. |

| Medical Arts Library Membership | LSRHS | 2016-2017 | Mel Gonsalves | This grant funded a two year membership to the Nucleus Medical Arts Library which will allow any teacher at LS access to many types of informative videos and resources. The videos will be used in class to enhance lectures and more importantly, the 400+plus animations videos are narrated with exceptional quality. Teachers can also create keynote type presentations while using over 20,000 medical illustrations and other tools. Topics include monograph anatomy, physiology, embryology, surgery, trauma, pathology, diseases, conditions and other topics. |
| Flexible Seating Options in the Regular Classroom | Loring | 2016-2017 | Sara Fischer | This grant provided a regular fourth grade classroom with various flexible seating options, including Hokki stools, stability chairs and adjustable podiums. Attention span and focus increases when a student’s body can bounce or shift without disturbance. By having a variety of seating options for students to choose from, students will improve their focus for optimum learning. |

| Sun Spotter Sunspot Tracking as a Means to Prove Solar Rotation | LSRHS | 2016-2017 | Chris Collins, Samantha Parker | This grant allowed the LS Earth Science and Astronomy instructors to purchase 3 new Sun Spotter devices. Sun Spotter devices allow students to safely view the photosphere (visible surface of the Sun) by projecting an image of the Sun onto a piece of paper. This allows students to identify and track (by tracing the sunspots on a piece of paper) sunspots over the course of their investigation of the Sun and stellar evolution units. |
| Open Circle Re-Energizer Workshop | Haynes | 2016-2017 | Sharon MacDonald, Kristyn Travers | This grant funded a three hour workshop specifically to review strategies, vocabulary and routines for the Open Circle Social Competency Program that SPS uses as part of its Social-Emotional Learning Program. Open Circle provides a unique, evidence-based social and emotional learning program for elementary schools from Kindergarten through Grade 5. The workshop facilitators delivered interactive, in-person professional development for all school staff. This workshop included classroom teachers, specialists and assistants. The curriculum proactively develops children’s social and emotional skills, including managing emotions, empathy, positive relationships and problem solving. Open Circle helps schools build communities where students feel safe, cared for and engaged in learning. |
| School Start Time Forum | SPS District | 2016-2017 | Jeff Kotkin, Christine Hogan | This grant funded the full honorarium for Dr. Judith Owens, MD, MPH, who spoke about the importance of sleep for our students at Curtis Middle School on January 12, 2017, at 7:00pm. Dr. Owens is the Director of Sleep Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and a faculty member in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She is an internationally-recognized authority on pediatric sleep and the author of over 150 original research and review articles in peer-review journals, chapters, and books on the topic. This event was free and open to the public. |

Access to these tools will allow students to fully realize the artistic and design capabilities of software (Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop). The tablets will facilitate student ability to acquire and use new skills in technology and design while creating designs that will integrate with other tools such as the laser cutter and cnc router. |

The event provides hands-on cultural experience for learners and lovers of Chinese/Asian Cultures from various student groups. This open-door event also offers the whole LS community a taste of China; all students and staff have the opportunity to taste and make dumplings, learn to use chopsticks, learn about the Chinese Spring Festival, and engage in many other cultural activities. |

It has been found that when students sit on a balance ball (stability ball) they are using both sides of their brains. When the brain is being stimulated, they can be more focused on learning and it allows a student to process information, concentrate, discuss and participate in all areas of learning in the classroom. Stability balls have also been found to be incredibly helpful to students with attention challenges. |

Rekenreks “provide learners with the visual models they need to discover number relationships and develop a variety of addition and subtraction strategies, including doubles plus or minus one, making tens, and compensation, thereby leading to automaticity of basic facts”. |
| Center for Innovation | LSRHS | 2015-2016 | Bella Wong | LS is excited to announce that we are creating a pilot center for innovation space for LS staff to work with students through project based learning to foster the development of skills that will support a mindset for adaptability and creative innovation. The intention is to support projects developed via an established design thinking protocol whereby students are prompted to think carefully how to define the problem and the interactive process they will use to resolve a solution. Students will be encouraged to think of applications to social and technical global issues when defining problems for their projects. The ultimate mission is to encourage students to think of themselves as social entrepreneurs for the future. |
